Edward Scissorhands

Edward Scissorhands is what one would call a high-quality family film. It's rated PG-13 but it's fine for even much younger children, as long as they don't get spooked by the general theme.

The film has a flashback structure, which could be seen as cliché, but it works well in this type of film and it's adding to the fairytale feel of the story. The opening and closing scene features some bad makeup and acting, but the rest of the film makes you forget and forgive.

The strongest point of the film is the ease with which it combines several layers of plot. Edward Scissorhands has a very wide symbolic layer with clear and easy-to-decipher meanings, and is therefore suitable for a very wide audience - from real film enthusiasts to children. It poses a lot of questions about the society, individuals and individuals within a society, but it does it in a relaxed way and without forcing it onto the viewer.

It is a lovely story made into a highly enjoyable film, and this makes it deserve to be called a must-see classic.
