Alice Through the Looking Glass is a great disappointment on all fronts. It is a weak attempt at explaining and psychoanalyzing a world that is supposed to be mad. It is important to mention that the film is very little to do with the book of the same name. It is a sequel of a previous film and delivers exactly what you would expect from a film whose name ends (or in this case, should end) with "2". The plot is boring and it doesn't make any sense (and not in a good way). There is an intended twist in the story, but it is poorly developed, and the film would have been much better without it. The film is unnecessarily sentimental, and it doesn't even make up for it by pretty shots, of which there are exactly two. One would expect such a special-effect-heavy picture to be full of aesthetically pleasing scenes, but that just isn't the case. The score is disappointing too, and the end credit music is a complete miss, but by that time, you really won't care anymore. Perhaps the one positive thing about this film is that it makes an attempt at a feminist message about empowering women, but this, too, is weak and a two-dimensional cliché. This film is perfectly suitable for children, i.e. there is little to no violence, a message about being nice to siblings and apologising, etc., but there is a huge risk of your young ones wandering away from the TV, because doing their homework will seem a lot more fun than watching this, sadly. Perhaps the best thing about Alice Through the Looking Glass are those two seconds of Alan Rickman's voice. Do they justify sitting through the rest of the 113 minutes? Up to you to decide.
