Big Fish

Big Fish is a big film about a big truth embroidered into a fantastic story. Seeing it is compulsory.

It is a film about stories and storytelling, and this is well supported by its structure with many embedded tales. The different storylines are entangled and sometimes purposely difficult to distinguish, creating a bigger picture. Despite this, the film has a linear feel, which makes the plot easy to follow. All this pulls you in completely.

The film offers a discussion about the perception of reality and subjective views of events. This doesn't feel imposed, but instead it comes from the film in its entirety.

There is a lot of hidden humour in Big Fish. There are a number of funny juxtapositions and on-camera hyperboles to emphasize the fairytale-like nature of the story. This is done completely without ridicule, creating a beautiful atmosphere throughout the film. This is further aided by lovely music and sound effects and by beautiful colours throughout the film. The film is pure pleasure to watch.

Big Fish is a good example of a technically strong film with a catchy story and multiple layers of meaning. It is definitely a film to see.
